Here’s a funny question, are you having trouble passing stool? Well, we might know the cause of it. To put it simply, you’re constipated. If you are constipated but aren’t aware of how to solve this “little” but painful problem, let me assure you, you probably aren’t the only one suffering from it. Constipation is one of the most common digestive issues in the world. An estimated 2.5 million people in the United States experience constipation. And for my desi gals out there, we often heard our mothers saying that it’s just constipation and a simple home remedy will do the trick but haven’t you ever wondered why we get constipated? And what exactly are those “mysterious” remedies our wise mothers’ force use to take?

What is Constipation?
Constipation is a difficult and uncomfortable bowel movement that makes it not easy to pass out stool. The main function of the colon is to absorb water from the digested food, where further metabolic reactions take place, turning the digested food into a waste product called stool. When the stool lacks enough moisture due to over absorption of water, this results in a hard and dry stool, which makes it extremely hard to pass out.
The symptoms of constipation are abdominal pain, bloating, having fewer than 3 weeks of bowel movements, and the feeling of not completely passing out stool. Normally in adults, bowel movements occur at least three times per day and in children, it typically occurs two to three times per day, and for babies three to four bowel movements per day is the normal.
There are multiple causes for contracting constipation, such as:
- Poor diet – A diet consisting of low fiber and inadequate water intake can increase the absorption of water and harden the stool.
- Prescribed medications – Certain medicines have side effects, which could lead to constipation. It is always best to consult your GP if you are experiencing any side effects. They could either provide you with an alternative drug, reduce the dosage of the drug, or give you some fiber supplements.
- A change in routine – Travelling or stress causes slow muscle contraction in the colon, which may lead to constipation.
- Lack of exercise or physical movement – Especially in cases where patients are bed-ridden; this can delay the impulse for bowel movement.
- Medical conditions – Such as Parkinson’s disease, hypercalcemia, hypo/hyperthyroidism, pelvic floor disease, and many more, can affect the muscular functions of the large intestine, which may result in constipation.
- Psychological factors – This includes the habitual behavior of withholding stool for a long duration. This may lead to constipation as well.
How to Clean The Intestine and Stomach by Using Olive Oil?
Many of you may be wondering, “Is olive oil good for constipation?”. The answer is yes! Olive oil is one of the best natural laxatives that you could use to cure constipation. Olive oil has a handful of benefits. It is a great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, and it helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It’s also known to assist in weight loss since it’s an oil that consists of mostly unsaturated fats.
Olive oil is good for constipation, and there have been multiple researches conducted to study olive oil as a great laxative. The use of olive oil for constipation is the safest, healthiest, and most effective way of treating the symptoms of constipation. The oil lubricates the digestive system, making bowel movement occur more easily. The fats that are present in olive oil may help smoothen the inner walls of the large intestine, which helps facilitate the stool movement. Olive oil also contributes to helping with bowel movement by causing the stool to hold more water, making it softer to pass out.
Olive oil and constipation prevention go hand-in-hand. The recommended intake of olive oil is about 1 to 2 tablespoon per day, that is, if one is experiencing constipation. There are many ways to incorporate olive oil into your diet. In the morning, to lubricate the digestive system the whole day, you could add a tablespoon of olive oil in your coffee or orange juice. They are also a great substitute for mayonnaise, especially in salads. You could always drizzle a little olive oil onto your grilled chicken or tuna salads or even use it for cooking various dishes. This will allow you to obtain all the nutrients and fibers your body may need, and at the same time, help lubricate your digestive system. Olive oils are great for providing your body with healthy fats. Although, I get a lot of questions from people asking, “Does apple cider vinegar help UTI?”. It’s great for the prevention of infections like UTI, and along with olive oils, you have a strong front to fight off those infections.
Although, avoid taking large doses of olive oil as it may lead to weight gain, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. More importantly, if you’re still experiencing constipation for a week or more then, it’s best to consult with your closest doctor immediately for treatment.
Moreover, there are other alternatives that one could use. If say, the grocery store has somehow, mysteriously run out of olive oil then, you could switch to sesame seed oil or even castor oil. Sesame oil benefits are similar to olive oil, and both oils almost have the same properties. However, sesame oil is extremely good for the heart, joints, bones, gums, and teeth. It can also be used as a natural laxative. Sesame oil is a good source of fiber. Similar to olive oil, sesame oil composition creates enough moisture in the walls of the digestive intestine. Therefore, helping the dry and hardened stool pass out more easily. And castor oil has been one of those old-time remedies that’ve been around for ages. It is a well-known laxative; however, it’s not as easy to swallow, though (ugh), which is why I usually prefer olive oil or sesame seed oil over castor oil.
The bottom line here is constipation is a serious and painful condition. To avoid it and reduce the risk of contracting it, suggests staying hydrated and having a proper diet, which consists of an adequate amount of fiber. Plus, taking in olive oil or sesame oil are few of the best, natural & healthy ways to solve our “little bathroom dilemma.”
