What is Coronavirus?
Let’s start with the basics and learn more about the minute microbe that has made many, its victims. According to WHO reports, The Novel coronavirus belongs to a large family of coronaviruses that causes many of the symptoms of a common cold, viral infection including respiratory issues and in severe cases, it also causes SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Coronavirus is most commonly found in animals and can easily spread from animals to humans.
The Novel coronavirus began from a seafood market in the city of Wuhan, where not only seafood was sold for consumption, but other illegal wildlife was also traded. Unlike the other human corona viruses like SARS and MERS, this new strain of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has never been identified in humans before. Very little information is available about the corona virus. However, we do know that human to human transmission of the virus is possible.
What are The Viral Illness Symptoms & Symptoms of Flu?
This unpredictable infection can have little to no symptoms to severe symptoms that could cause death. The disease symptoms may vary from fever, breathing difficulties, shortness of breath and cough. And the symptoms may begin to show after 2 to 14 or 15 days, which is a very rough estimate drawn from the incubation period of the previous MERS virus.
Under severe cases, pneumonia, acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and death is even possible. According to experts, the Novel coronavirus is more widespread as compared to SARS and MERS; however, the latter has proven to be more deadly than the current corona virus outbreak.
What Is Done To Stop The Spread of Coronavirus?
Scientists and Doctors from pharmaceuticals, the WHO and large biotech companies are working on a coronavirus vaccine for humans. However, pharmaceuticals and researchers all over the world are working to put out an effective vaccine before the next year and a half, which is estimated for the development of corona virus vaccine. To contain the epidemic, Chinese authorities have quarantined the Wuhan region, and active measures are being taken by Chinese officials to contain the spread of the disease, through the cancellations of many international flights and ceasing or limiting public transportation in the region.
Certain countries have stopped trading and even evacuated their citizens and also banned Chinese nationals from entering. Although researchers and scientists are working tirelessly to work on new vaccines, expecting vaccines for humans or even bovine coronavirus vaccines for certain calves and meat-producing animals is tough and may take up to a year. Which is why taking precautions and being aware of the situation is what you could do to keep safe.
What Precautions Can I Take To Be Safe? Is There A Coronavirus Treatment?
According to the WHO guidelines, to limit the spread and cause of the infection, wash your hands as regularly as possible with soaps or alcoholic-based hand sanitizer. Try as much as possible to cook your meat all the way through, boil the milk before consumption and to handle undercooked or raw meat with caution to avoid cross-contamination with other food. Avoid public transports as much as possible. And if you have any symptoms of flu, such as cough, fever, difficulty in breathing, do not panic. Visit your nearest health care provider and try to avoid any transmission by avoiding contact with friends, family and peers and by wearing surgical face masks, cough or sneeze into a tissue and dispose of the tissue safely before washing your hands, and avoid public areas, especially live markets. If you do visit markets, try to minimise contact with animals or the surfaces they are on. When visiting your healthcare provider, be sure to share your travel details as well. Avoid travel as much as possible if you have any of the viral illness symptoms, and if you suddenly come down with these symptoms during travel, immediately notify the crew and seek medical attention.
Even though the majority of the cases have been reported in China, the coronavirus has spread to other Asian countries with one reported death from the virus in the Philippines, and other countries like Australia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Again the majority of the cases are from individuals who have travelled to and from China.
